The Challenge
The Einstar Rockit is a precision handheld 3D scanner, and it earns its keep by leaving the bench and going wherever the work is. That mobility is also its weak point. It has exposed optics and a polished body, and it gets handled constantly during a scan. There was no protective case for it from the manufacturer, and nothing worth buying anywhere else. That left an expensive, delicate instrument with no dedicated layer of protection and a smooth body that is not the easiest thing to hold onto for a long scanning session.
What We Did
Rather than guess at the dimensions, we used the scan-to-CAD workflow directly: the Rockit was 3D scanned on a Creality Scan Otter, and that scan became the reference the case was modeled around in FreeCAD. Designing off a real scan of the exact body is what let the case fit tightly and leave every opening clear, the optical windows, the buttons, the vent, and the port, so the scanner stays fully usable with the case on.
3D Scan
We used our existing Creality Scan Otter to 3D scan the new Einstar Rockit to be used as a reference in the case design.
CAD Model
From the 3D scan we were able to easily create a custom shell that fits the scanner perfectly and provides extra grip and bump protection for use around our workshop.
The design goal was not just protection, it was better scanning. Sculpted finger grips were built into the shell so the scanner sits more securely in the hand through a long capture, which is easier and safer than gripping the bare body. It prints as a single part shell in 95A TPU, a flexible material chosen so the case flexes onto the scanner and cushions the knocks of daily use instead of cracking. The shell is segmented in the middle with a small cutout to allow it to be flexed and pulled snugly over the scanner.
The Result
The finished case gives the Rockit a snug, grippable layer that makes scanning more comfortable and guards the body against the bumps and scratches of real workshop use. We are honest about what it is: this is everyday protection and a better grip, not a drop-proof armored case. On an instrument this precise, no printed shell is going to save it from a hard fall, and we would rather say that plainly than oversell it. What it does do, it does every time the scanner comes out.
It also happens to be a clean demonstration of the whole capability in one part: a real object scanned, rebuilt in CAD from that scan, and printed into a functional result. That is the same chain we bring to any reverse-engineering or custom-design job.
